English language (A-Z) eligibility

The English Language (Eligibility) Course is provided in the second year of the curriculum for students enrolled in the LMG and SGIPA CdL.

The Course is divided into two parts:

- Language Practice Course taught by Prof. Mario Bianco (I and II semester);

- Institutional Course taught by Prof. Judith Turnbull (II semester).

Eligibility for the English language exam is determined by passing both parts.

Learning Objectives.
The course aims at the achievement of B1 level.

Course Description.
The lecture course takes place in semesters I and II.

The course includes:

1- review of basic grammar to get to exercises such as:

  • transformation from active to passive sentence and from direct to indirect speech,
  • formulation of hypothetical sentences of the type 'zero', 'first' and 'second',
  • use of modal verbs.

2- Presentation of a vocabulary specific to the field (legal English) through texts taken from the English press and completion of gap-filling and word-building exercises.

Written test - no. 6 appeals per year (May, June, July, September, December, February)

IMPORTANT: At the end of the 1st semester a.y. 2024-2025 lectureship course, students will be able to take the examination part in the DECEMBER 2024 call to check the attainment of B1 level, which is necessary for the attainment of the aptitude in the English Language exam.
If they pass, attendance of course classes in Semester II (FEBRUARY-May 2025) is at their discretion. Conversely, those who do not intend to take the exam portion in the DECEMBER 2024 call or in case the exam is failed, may continue to attend the course in Semester II and take the exam in MAY 2025.

Those who obtain 60% of the available points will be 'eligible'.

IMPORTANT!!!
Students will be able to take the test related to the institutional course (II semester) taught by Prof. Judith Turnbull even if they have not passed the lecture test and vice versa. 

 

EXEMPTED Students - Language Exercise Course, Prof. Mario Bianco

Based on the evaluation achieved in the English Language Placement Test organized by the University Language Center, students of B1, B2, C1 and C2 level are exempted from attending lectureship courses and related written test. Instead, they will have to take the test related to the institutional course (II semester) taught by Prof. Judith Turnbull.

Students holding B1/B2/C1/C2 level language certifications issued by a recognized board, such as U.C.L.E.S Cambridge or Trinity College, are exempt from the language assessment related to the lectorate course. These certifications correspond to PET, First Certificate (Cambridge), Cambridge English Advanced (CAE), Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) and Trinity ISE 1, 2, 3, 4, IELTS 4.5-5.0 (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL iBT 42-71[5] (Test of English as a Foreign Language), Pearson JETSET Level 4 (Junior English Tests and Senior English Tests).

English Language Examination Verbalisation (Eligibility)

The student will be able to verbalize eligibility, only after passing both tests (grammar exercises and institutional course). The exam roll for which the student should register is that of Prof. Judith Turnbull, the titular lecturer of the course (No. 7 rolls per year (May, June, July, September, December, January, February).

The validity of both tests is one calendar year.

Type of activity
In class, the student is asked to do exercises related to the topics covered by the lecturer (grammatical aspects and legal vocabulary).
The lecturer assigns additional exercises for the student to do independently to strengthen his or her preparation.
Classes are biweekly and last 90 minutes.
The amount of self-study required varies from student to student but on average 30/40 minutes is sufficient to review/strengthen the work in each lecture.
