The English Language Course (proficiency) is scheduled for the first year of the Bachelor's Degree in Legal Services (SSG) and the second year of the study plan for students enrolled in the single-cycle Master's Degree in Law (LMG) and in Business and Public Administration Law (SGIPA).
The course is divided into two parts:
• Language Practice Course
LMG degree program taught by Prof. Mario Bianco (first semester – in-person lessons);
SSG and SGIPA degree program taught by Prof. Line Abdul Messie Khamasmeya (first semester – recorded lessons);
• Institutional Course taught by Prof. Judith Turnbull (second semester of the LMG-SSG-SGIPA degree programs).
Passing both parts of the English language exam is required to pass the course.

Learning objectives
The course aims to achieve level B1.
Course description
The language course takes place in the first semester.
The course includes:
1. review of basic grammar in order to carry out exercises such as:
o transformation from active to passive voice and from direct to indirect speech,
o formulation of hypothetical sentences such as ‘zero’, ‘first’ and ‘second’,
o use of modal verbs.
2. presentation of sector-specific vocabulary (legal English) through texts taken from the English press and completion of gap-filling and word-building exercises.

The teaching materials provided by the instructor are available on the Moodle/Dolly Blended platforms page for the language exercises course.
Type of activity
In class, students are asked to complete exercises related to the topics covered by the instructor (grammar and legal vocabulary).
The instructor assigns additional exercises for students to complete independently to reinforce their preparation.
Lessons are held twice a week and last 90 minutes.
The amount of individual study required varies from student to student, but on average, 30-40 minutes are sufficient to review/reinforce the work of each lesson.

Written exam - 6 exam sessions per year (May, June, July, September, December, February)
A grade of 60% or higher is required to pass.
IMPORTANT!!!
Students may take the exam for the institutional course (second semester) taught by Prof. Judith Turnbull even if they have not passed the language course exam, and vice versa.
EXEMPT students - Language Practice Course, Prof. Mario Bianco and Prof. Line Abdul Messie Khamasmeya
Based on the results of the English Language Placement Test organized by the University Language Center, students at levels B1, B2, C1, and C2 are exempt from attending language courses and taking the corresponding written exam. Instead, they must take the exam for the institutional course (second semester) taught by Prof. Judith Turnbull.
Students who hold B1/B2/C1/C2 language certificates issued by a recognized commission, such as U.C.L.E.S Cambridge or Trinity College, are exempt from the language assessment for the language course. These certificates correspond to PET, First Certificate (Cambridge), Cambridge English Advanced (CAE), Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE), and Trinity ISE 1, 2, 3, 4, IELTS 4.5-5.0 (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL iBT 42-71[5] (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and Pearson JETSET Level 4 (Junior English Tests and Senior English Tests).

English Language Exam (Proficiency)
Students may record their eligibility only after passing both tests (grammar exercises and institutional course). Students must register for the exam session held by Prof. Judith Turnbull, the course lecturer (7 exam sessions per year (May, June, July, September, December, January, February).
Both tests are valid for one calendar year.
