The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia participates in the MAECI-MUR-Italian Universities Internship Program, which allows students to undertake curricular internships at the Diplomatic Representations, Consular Offices and Italian Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

“My name is Marta Cerafogli, a law student at the University of Modena and Reggio
Emilia. In 2022 I won the call for the MAECI internship at the Permanent Representation
of Italy in Brussels, which I did from September to December in flexible mode at a distance from Italy.
The internship, in addition to allowing me to deepen my knowledge of languages (especially
English and French), gave me a closer understanding of the objectives and working methods of
work of an embassy and European institutions, placing me within their operational arrangements.
One of my main tasks was working with other officials in the Transport Office,
Agriculture and Fisheries, Health, Labor, and Social Policy in drafting the dossier on
food labeling. Indeed, both within Italian borders and at institutions,
there has been a heated debate on whether to make a single form of labeling mandatory
on food products in the European single market, assessing their nutritional characteristics.
I have also participated in seminars, discussion events and workshops chaired not only by experts, but also
by representatives of major European institutions such as the Parliament, the Council and the Commission.
Although I was not able to experience the workplaces in person, the distance was overcome thanks to the
constant involvement put in place towards me by my supervisors.
The internship placed me in a dynamic, stimulating and multicultural environment, responding
fully to my deep interest in European law and international law.
I recommend to those who intend to pursue this career, or who are passionate about these
subjects, to have an experience like this to have direct contact with the reality of
an embassy. An internship of this caliber enhances those who undertake it not only on a curricular level,
but also personally,as it allows the acquisition of some fundamental skills such as
teamwork, flexibility, the ability to organize and to fulfill sudden and
not previously planned through quick and effective responses.”

I am writing from Lusaka, capital of Zambia, where I am doing an internship in the local Embassy
of Italy having won the last Maeci-Crui call for applications.
I am living a very exciting, dynamic and formative experience, which allows not only to
collaborate effectively with other Embassies, Ambassadors, Ministries, Organizations
International and NGOs by putting to use what I studied at the University, but also to question my own
