Master's Degree in Law:
A thesis prepared in an original way by the student with the guidance of a supervisor is required for the award of the Master's Degree. The thesis must be discussed publicly at the session of a special committee composed of faculty members related to the Department.
Through the final examination, the student demonstrates the ability to argue with technical terminology and use of legal concepts acquired during the five-year period, an original and reasoned thesis and to be able to support it against possible objections.
The Thesis and Degree Examination Regulations of the Course of Study define the terms and procedures for awarding the thesis and the criteria for identifying the thesis advisor. In certain cases, it is necessary to appoint a counter-reporter with the task of highlighting the most questionable points of the paper.
The final graduation grade is the result of an algebraic sum derived from the weighted average of the results achieved by the student in the various profit examinations, calculated in hundredths, and a score comprised between 0 and 6 directed at assessing the scientific quality of the thesis work and any peculiarities relating to its performance (e.g., research activity carried out abroad).
For the 'increase beyond 4 points in the starting grade or for the awarding of honors, which must be unanimously decided, the appointment of a counterproponent is required. An additional two points are awarded to students graduating in progress and one point to those who have written a significant part of the thesis abroad.
For admission to the final examination, the student must have passed all the examinations stipulated in the study plan, have earned 279 CFUs and be in good standing with the payment of university fees.
The Departmental Council establishes the schedule of degree appeals, distributed for each of the sessions of the academic year.
A student who meets the requirements set forth in the Thesis and Examination Regulations of the course of study in which he or she is enrolled may request the assignment of the subject in which to write the paper for the final examination.
The assignment of the thesis is agreed upon between the student and the professor on the basis of an interview between the two. The subject chosen by the student must be among those already successfully taken by him/her.
The lecturer, after ascertaining through the database of thesis assignments that the student has not already obtained another assignment, agrees with the student on the title of the thesis, after which the same lecturer will fill out the appropriate form, from which the following data must result:
(a) first name last name and matriculation number of the undergraduate;
(b) degree program;
(c) the chosen subject;
(d) the faculty member in charge of the subject who will serve as the supervisor (together with the name, if any, of the expert in the subject who will actually follow the student until the final draft of the paper);
(e) the title of the thesis;
(f) the day of assignment of the thesis.
A student who decides to write his or her thesis in a subject other than the one already assigned must inform the teacher of the thesis originally requested, who must inform the Director and as well as the teacher of the new assignment. The latter may proceed to complete a new form only after ensuring that the lecturer of the original request has been informed of the thesis change.
Once the assignment of the thesis title has been obtained, the student must work on the paper in the manner agreed upon with the professor in charge of the thesis subject.
As the work nears completion, the student can proceed with the next steps to enter the final examination.
